Omelyan Antonovych is a prominent figure of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists. In 1949 he immigrated to the United States. Beginning from 1960s Omelyan Antonovych has been annually donating to various programs in Ukrainian Studies, in particular, to the Harvard University Foundation of Ukrainian Studies Departments. On December 30th the international "Tetyana and Omelyan Antonovych Foundation” was established; since then, Omelyan Antonovych annually presents prestigious literary and scientific awards to those who dedicated their lives to study of the history and culture of Ukrainian people. The other aspect of O. Antonovych’s activities is granting funds for the implementation of crucial projects in Ukrainian Studies. It is he who sponsored the creation of the “Boikivshchyna” museum and the monument to the strugglers for Ukraine’s freedom in the town Of Dolyna, as well as the restoration of the main building together with the arts department (the architectural monument of the 17th century) of the Lviv National Vasyl Stefanyk Academic Library and the construction of a new building with extra reading rooms and exhibition pavilions (which is now named “The Tetyana and Omelyan Antonovych Palace of Arts”). This outstanding man provided for the major repairs, restoration and equipping of The National University “Kyevo-Mohylianska Academy” Scientific Library which was also named to honor him and his wife. The overall cost of the above-mentioned projects amounts to more than 5,000,000$. Apart from this, Omelyan Antonovych has invested much in the Ukrainian publishing, in the restoration of the ancient Boikivshchyna churches, and in supporting Ukrainian art in USA. Omelyan Antonovych is a citizen of honor of the towns of Lviv and Dolyna. In 2007 he was also awarded a “Benefactor of the year”-private individual title. |
